We were a handful of people
that Sunday morning, January
15, 1967, as we met for our
first worship service. Rev.
Morgan had received the
cooperation and loving
support of his wife, Vernell,
in the founding of a new
church. Rev. Morgan was
departing from the June Cobb
Church to begin a nucleus
group who attended services
in the cavernous 100 seat
auditorium of the Leimert
Theater on 43rd
Place in Los Angeles. The theater had been
secured from Mr. George Pantages, the last of the
theater building families.
Near the end of the four
months stay in the theater, a
more compact facility became
available on Crenshaw
Boulevard at 43rd
Street.
With Jesse Whiteside
assisting him, Rev. Morgan wheeled the furniture
and organ through the streets to the
church’s new location. This
move began an exciting
period of growth and
development. Richard Dunn
built a platform for the
minister and the choir.
Office space, which also
doubled as a refreshment area
following services, was
procured next door. By the
end of 1967, we felt that we
were well on our way.
During the next two years,
the Guidance Church
experienced steady growth,
making the newly acquired
facility so crowded that it
became necessary to find a
new facility. This we found
just south of Florence
Avenue on Crenshaw Boulevard. On
September 7, 1970, Rev.
Morgan led his congregation
in worship from the pulpit
of the building we now
occupy.
As our church family
continued to expand, our
need for space continued to
increase. Thus on August 5,
1973 the Youth Building was
added and additional
property adjacent to the
sight on Crenshaw Boulevard was
purchased.
The continuing expansion of
the accredited class work in
Science of Mind, also marks
the progress of our church.
Classes which began in a
small space in the sanctuary
quickly grew and had to be
moved to regular
classrooms in the Southwest
Chapter of the Institute of
Religious Science.
The direction and continued
growth of Guidance was
charted by Dr. Dan and the
Board of Trustees. It is
with this quality of
leadership of our
Ministerial Staff, Board of
Trustees, various ministries
and the collective
consciousness of the
members, friends, and
partners of the body of
enlightened souls, that we
continue our dynamic
historic movement toward
greater expression under the
leadership of our new Chief
Minister, Rev. Nirvana
Reginald Gayle.
